Personality; Barry is, in a word, determined. To put him into any one category would be a true tragedy. He's brave, outgoing, friendly, energetic, straight-forward and just a little bit obnoxious. He may not be the protagonist from the game he resides from, but he certainly has enough spunk and character to make up for that fact. He strives every single day, constantly in a hurry, to become the best trainer and person that he possibly can be. He'll do anything for his friends, and his pokemon. He's extreme, hyper, impatient and overbearing to a fault, but he means the very best.

Energetic and friendly don't even begin to cover it.. He's been known to crash into people without any warning and no apologies, and he's more than willing to drag a complete stranger into a conversation and then run off before they even know what's hit them. "He's always in a hurry." is often a statement that is used in regards to him. His need to always be in a hurry and get to the next area stems from his need to be stronger, stronger than anyone, and to be the best person and trainer he possibly can in the space of a lifetime. No matter what, there's always room for improvement. For this to occur, he won't allow any sort of shyness to get in the way. He'll barrel into your life without a second thought and achieve whatever goal he's reaching towards, no matter what. No one can stand in his way.

Even before Barry became a pokemon trainer, Barry was a very determined person. He was always ready for the next big thing, whether it be a rare pokemon or an adventure into the woods. This is one thing about him, he never changes throughout his entire story. He never calms down, he never stops being in a hurry, and he never loses his determination to be the best. Ever since he was young, being raised by a brash gym leader, he's had a goal in life to best his father and become the greatest trainer in the world. Nothing has deterred him from this, and nothing ever will. Even when he doesn't get to have the great legendary pokemon, or get to be the pokemon champion, he's not let down for more than a couple seconds before he's back on his feet and trying again. Whether he wins or loses, his determination never wavers.

Barry is very courageous. Along with his stubborn determination and excitement, comes bravery. He's not afraid for even a second to do whatever he has to do to get out of a bad situation (including using a stranger's pokemon), or to attain his goal of being the best. He'll run right into any situation even if it means that he might be in danger, especially if it's to be there for his friends or pokemon, but he will rush into such situations simply to test his strength as well. He's headstrong and impatient, so any chance to show off his skills or become better in any way are taken without a second thought. He is never shown to have fear during any situation, which likely leaves him stickly situations. However, he's always training both himself and his pokemon, so any situations that he gets into through lack of wit can be gotten out of through a bounty of brawn.

When it comes down to it, Barry isn't afraid to do anything for his friends. If he finds them in a bind, he'll rush in and help them in a second, and he's also healed all of the protagonist's pokemon when they were in need, despite the fact that he needed healing himself. His friends always come before him, no questions asked! He never stops for even a moment to think things through, he just runs based on instinct. Usually his first reaction will be what he goes through with, unless someone stops him and makes him sit still long enough to think and change his mind, which usually doesn't happen. (He runs too fast!) Because of this, he's very quick at making decisions, even if his decisions aren't always the best for him or others.

His childhood friend is Lucas, who has always been his next door neighbor and the first person that he'll go to when he wants to have one of his adventures. He's always felt that this boy was his rival from the very beginning. Always challenging him to races or other contests of their strength or wit even before they got to battle with their first pokemon. And when they do get their first pokemon, Barry is the first to say that his pokemon was the tougher and more skilled of the two. And of course, throughout the game, he challenges Lucas constantly to battles, to prove to Lucas and himself that both his pokemon and himself have gotten stronger since their last battle. Lucas is his eternal rival, but he's also his closest friend, and as stated earlier, he will put Lucas before himself at any time. He truly respects his rival, otherwise his wouldn't be so determined to be better than him.

Although Barry is brash and very rude, he also has many values that he upholds. He's very attentive when it comes to learning about pokemon, despite his impatience to move forward, so it's evident that learning is a huge part of the process for him. Anything that slows him down is something very important to him, and this includes paying attention in school. He won't leave the room or put a book down until he's memorized most of the information provided to him. He wants to learn everything he can about pokemon and how to take care of them, but he's still quite lazy with this, preferring to train his pokemon than read about them. He's far too quick to say that he's memorized something so that he can be on his way as soon as possible. So although he takes learning and researching seriously, he can get impatient with it rather quickly. He never forgets the facts that he's learned, but he's not a very good researcher. So even though he's determined to memorize everything on the page, he's not one to go and research anything relating to it, so he knows a little about a lot, rather than being an expert on anything in particular.

Barry is very quick to talk to someone he's already met and knows, but he tends to be very wary of strangers. He's not necessarily scared of them, but he gets quieter around them. An explanation for this could be that he's worried that they might be stronger than both him and his rival, or that they might take away something that he holds precious. However, he is not frightened of making friends. As soon as he gets to know them at all, he'll loosen right up and become just as loud as he would with anyone else. He doesn't rely on anyone else, so he doesn't open up very easily, and he doesn't have a need to. He's not a very deep and emotional person, and he doesn't dwell for very long on things in the past. Any emotions that he feels come out in a burst and then fade away in less than ten minutes, and he wouldn't have it any other way!

So in conclusion, Barry is a very energetic and outgoing person. He's friendly and not afraid to push his way in the middle of everything to attain whatever goal he might be achieving. He is determined, head-strong, and willing to do anything for his pokemon and friends, up to and including something that might be detrimental to his own well-being. He's brash and doesn't think before he runs into a situation, but he's capable of getting out of most situations with his experience with pokemon. He's always in a hurry, but there are still certain things that he finds important enough to slow down for and take care of, such as training, learning, battling and his friends. He's selfish and selfless all in one go, and more than anything, he's determined to be the best he can possibly be.
